ABSTRACT
A review is presented of the developments leading to the founding of the National Translations Center. The sudden surge of multi-lingual scientific and technical literature in the post World War II years, and especially during the Sputnik era, brought into focus the handicap of the mono-lingual US professional community. For the past 30 years, the National Translations Center has been serving as an international depository and information source for English scientific and technical translations available from any known source in the US and other English-speaking countries. The scope of operation and services of the Center are explained in some detail. Various translation accession lists published over the years are discussed, as is the Center’s monthly index. Future plans and goals are presented.
