ABSTRACT
Transport geography seeks to understand the spatial organization of mobility. Regardless of the specific solutions to congestion that are considered, increasing demand is placing unprecedented requests for investments on transport infrastructures. The transportation industry is changing so significantly in form and function that the very important changes in the way it is organized and managed tend to be overlooked. The role of transportation in society has been increasingly acknowledged, a role that goes beyond its economic contribution. The sustainability of transportation systems will be achieved through a series of innovations and measures to improve the performance of transportation modes, terminals, infrastructure and management. A fundamental component of future transport systems, freight and passengers alike, is that they must provide increased flexibility and adaptability to changing market circumstances (origins, destinations, costs, speed, etc.), some unforeseen, while complying to an array of environmental, safety and security regulations.
