ABSTRACT

The principal designer must plan, manage and monitor the pre-construction phase, and coordinate construction health and safety during this phase to ensure that the project is carried out without risk to health and safety. The principal designer must ensure the cooperation of all those involved in a project and ensure prompt provision of appropriate pre-construction information to all designers and all contractors appointed by the client. Designers and contractors who historically have not had to notify projects, produce pre-construction information, construction phase plans and health and safety files will require training in order to combine their CDM 2015 roles with their traditional roles, whether or not they decide, initially, to appoint a sub-consultant to advise them. On a typical domestic project, the lead designer will be the principal designer by written appointment or default, and is likely to be in overall control of the management of the project, including acting as contract administrator.
