ABSTRACT

The UK’s annual Serpentine Pavilion, a commission to create a temporary structure on the lawn of the Serpentine Galleries in London, is increasingly inviting younger, lesser-known talent such as Madrid-based selgascano and Chilean Smiljan Radic. The aim of the Young Architects Program was initially to simply provide a partially shaded outdoor space for visitors and the local community for the summer – a place to stop and pause amidst the hustle and bustle of New York’s all-consuming, densely packed urban environment. The Living also uses elements of its research into Hy-Fi to inform its ‘low-tech biotech’ approach — combining biological technologies and cutting-edge engineering to create new building materials, foster environmental awareness and prototype the architecture of the future.
