ABSTRACT

A proportion of the building stock has proved to be adaptable more by accident than by design. There are movements and initiatives that have proposed ways to deliberately design buildings to be more flexible and adaptable. 3D Reid created an adaptable building concept based on research into the design parameters for different types of building. The research and case studies show that it is possible to design buildings that are more adaptable. The use of a layered approach allows buildings to be flexed and adapted more readily. Designing-in some degree of flexibility to allow internal partitions to be relocated and local services to be extended or augmented may be appropriate, depending on the building use and the lifespan of the components. Designing simple, robust and elegant buildings that are valued by people helps to make sure that buildings endure.
