ABSTRACT

Lecture theatres provide an efficient method for teaching, but the traditional raked lecture theatre with fixed rows of seats has its limitations for student engagement and may be replaced in part by digital means. Flexibility is an essential part of future teaching room design, whether it is the ability to subdivide large rooms to smaller ones or to support technology enabled active learning or Advanced Learning Classrooms which allow a combination of teaching from a lectern in the centre of the room with interactive work around tables using different media. The ‘Flipped Classroom’ at the University of New South Wales, Australia, offers students a space where teaching is by a facilitator rather than a lecturer, guiding group discussions or providing individual attention for students who are expected to have prepared for the sessions by watching podcasts and reviewing online background materials.
