ABSTRACT

Some of the major issues of climate engagement and climate psychology are explored in this chapter, including the importance of recognising and addressing the overwhelming nature of anxiety and fear. In order to negotiate psychologically defensive reactions of denial and disavowal, in ourselves as well as in others, there needs to be an awareness of what narratives frame conversations and understandings, and the effects they have. Climate communications which openly acknowledge the climate emergency can facilitate engagement when mindful of acknowledging emotional arousal and putting in place support systems. This chapter ends by highlighting how ongoing climate engagement can increase psychological resilience and the ability to tolerate and learn from uncertainty.
