ABSTRACT

Plockton is in the western Highlands of Scotland, not far from Skye and Kyle of Lochalsh. This is a 24-unit housing scheme in Burnside, on the edge of Plockton by Rural Design, creating a new settlement character based on the traditional white-farmhouse-and-barn vernacular of the region. Another, smaller scheme of two homes, in Plockton itself, blends in so well that you could walk by and believe it has been there for years. The target for house building on nearby Skye is 100 houses a year, which seems phenomenal for such a small island. Burnside is separated from Plockton by the railway line, so lent itself to a new settlement with its own character. Rural Design prepared a feasibility study for Burnside, but it took a long time to secure funding for the project. Schemes like this are creating an understanding of contemporary architecture across Scotland.
