ABSTRACT

Daniel Ball bought the site in 2011. It is a listed-curtilage farmyard in St Fagans Conservation Area. The planners had wanted its developer to tidy up the appearance of the existing buildings; however, Alan Gillard felt that the existing appearance represented the farmer’s additions over time, and resisted. This development on the outskirts of Cardiff in South Wales is set in an old farmyard. Surrounding the site are very standard suburban houses on one side and St Fagans Conservation Area on the other, with its white-rendered or Welsh-stone and slate cottages. The ‘LivEco’ brand is something that Gillard and Ball came up with together. It has high environmental standards, including healthy ventilation, combined with improved space and storage, and Secured by Design certification. Everyone was very comfortable and liked the warmth and the acoustics.
