ABSTRACT

In the 20th century, an exaltation of technology and boundless optimism in progress led to a new anthropocentrism–albeit of a more sophisticated kind than its medieval precursor. Humans seemed able to take control of the world by their own efforts, and set themselves once again at centre of the universe. Energy sustainability is one of the great challenges facing contemporary architecture, and necessary part of our response to challenge is to decide how best to control light and handle it correctly as part of all building projects. The ability to add light by means of artificial lighting has often led to serious errors in architecture. The ability to add light by means of artificial lighting has often led to two serious errors in architecture. Architecture even could be described as the creation of appropriate shade. Light is a given; the sun rises in the east and follows a course that changes every day independently of anything that humanity may do.
