Introduction

So-called “General American” (GenAm) is a dialect that sounds distinctly American, but not regionally specific. In other words, it ensures intelligibility across the United States, but doesn’t place you in Brooklyn, Fargo, or Tallahassee. It’s educated, but not fussy; casual, but not sloppy.
