ABSTRACT

There are a number of groups around the world, largely within academia and the construction industry, that are promoting these creative and inspiring ‘can-do’ approaches to safety. The use of vernacular design handed down through centuries of worldwide civilisation, together with the ground-breaking technology of modern products, systems and methods, are the essential ingredients for any new design. The Safety Visually principles are already being used in parts of the industry as an alternative method of identifying hazards and associated risks, minimising unacceptable risks and passing on possible risk control measures to contractors for managing during the construction phase, with a minimum of narrative documentation. This reflects the need to recognise ‘acceptable or tolerable risks’ within projects and the construction industry, and to help designers to go only ‘so far as is reasonably practicable’ to mitigate these significant issues as a collaborative team.
