ABSTRACT

As every concept design is established it is important to identify and highlight the key construction design and development (CDM) challenges on the project. Some of these are architectural features or associated activities that are unusual, difficult to manage, transient, not visually apparent on drawings or lost in other information. However, these constitute key elements of the design intent as much as the client brief, not to be eliminated lightly. Architectural designers must be encouraged to exercise their creative skills and to push the boundaries of innovative design. However, in doing so, significant considerations of constructional safety and future maintenance should also be borne in mind, but proportionately. While compiling and collating articles, learned papers and research documents for this guide it has become increasingly clear that the intentions of CDM have been misinterpreted by many, inside and outside the industry.
