ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the context and background of the research by briefly discussing the history of the conflict in Kashmir and the shifts and developments over the last few years. Thereafter we move on to discuss the role of youth in conflict, and specifically why the youth hold an important position in the conflict that has ensued in the Valley. Based on the identified gaps in psychological research on youth experiences of conflict related violence, the rationale for the study that informs the book is presented, and its main objectives are outlined. After a brief method section that gives the details of the research design, sampling and analysis techniques, major descriptive and preliminary findings are presented before moving on the in-depth discussions on violence, emotions and individual behaviour in large-scale conflict.
