ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information about: large-scale planning and connectivity, including suggestions for the design, construction and post-construction phases; biodiversity principles and measures that can be incorporated into new developments and regeneration projects; and negative features for wildlife, including inappropriate artificial lighting and roads. Advice on increasing biodiversity in gardens and green spaces is provided by several conservation organisations. The RSPB and others offer a range of advice for planning and creating a wildlife-friendly garden, including on creating habitats, planting to attract wildlife and putting up bird boxes. Careful planning and management can positively enhance temporary habitats and provide pioneer communities of invertebrates and other wildlife that will persist within the completed development. Measures to encourage this can include seeding with native wildflowers, the use of topographic features and the establishment of permanent wildlife corridors to encourage species movement.
