ABSTRACT

Effective management of the design process is an integral part of the procurement process but is, in itself, a complex set of activities. Modelling human interaction in groups and formal or informal organisations is more difficult and remains a major preoccupation of organisational sociologists and psychologists. The more comprehensive the information or data-gathering phase, the more accurate the model and the greater the likelihood of effective project control. Tools and techniques based on the mathematical analysis of activities and resources over time such as Gantt charts, proprietary project management software packages and Building Information Modelling are only a part of successful design management. The structure of design and project team can be explained using stakeholder analysis. Stakeholder roles will vary depending on the procurement route. Design responsibilities may become blurred, especially when the architect is employing some members of the team as sub-consultants or some design is being carried out by specialist contractors.
