ABSTRACT

Modern methods of construction, including Design for manufacture and assembly, the use of modular design principles, the increasing use of robotics on-site and off-site, and new materials and manufacturing processes are increasing. Design for manufacture and assembly embraces a number of topics but is primarily arranged around four topics: building spaces using modular techniques; building larger sub-assemblies; detailing for assembly; and eliminating wet and hot trades. The off-site management school aims to educate and inform the construction industry of the benefits of carrying out a greater proportion of ‘construction’ off-site. Lights-out manufacturing are commonplace in manufacturing. Factories using robotics do not need canteens, toilets, parking or other amenities, nor do they need lighting or heating. Some product manufacturers are beginning to use such factories but cases are limited. An increasing number of companies are designing and manufacturing buildings as products.
