The most accessible Olympic and Paralympic Games
For many disabled people, the standard of accessibility achieved at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was a unique experience. There are many reasons why the Games were considered the ‘most accessible Olympic and Paralympic Games in history’. London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games making inclusion in its broadest sense a major element of its work. An inclusive planning process had, however, started even before London submitted its bid to the International Olympic Committee. Stratford was designated an Opportunity Area in the 2004 London Plan – an area identified as having the potential to provide substantial new jobs and homes. A protocol between the Olympic Delivery Authority and the local planning authority was established to ensure that the principles of inclusive design informed and were integrated into the detailed design of the Olympic development and legacy works.
