ABSTRACT

Architecture sits on a tipping point that demands that architects change how they work individually and as a profession. It demands a systemic redesign of the profession and related organisations. Design practice is beginning to comprehend and metricise its capacity to effect change through behavioural economics, econometrics and cognitive psychology. These fields are proving the intuitive knowledge of architects on the factors, tools and design tactics that impact human decision-making, influencing behaviours and thereby empathy and culture. An emphasis on ‘place’ creates a new typology, one which curates and designs a multitude of flows to build systemically differently. Design is the highest order of innovation; the ability to firstly resolve and synthesise to a combinatory value higher than the individual technological, social, economic and organisation requirements/innovations while placing the citizen at the centre.
