ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a number of ways in which flood resilience can be encouraged, enabled and embedded in our daily lives. A community’s exposure and vulnerability to flooding depends on whether it is considered in relation to past, present or future flood risk scenarios. For many communities, insurance plays a critical role in supporting recovery from a flood event. In many historic communities damaged by floods, the discussion of whether properties should be conserved or preserved has become increasingly pertinent. As the impacts of floods continue to escalate, there is an urgent need to assess the flood resilience of communities, improve public awareness and offer practical strategies to reduce the consequences of flooding. One of the barriers to adaptation can be the obstinate mindset of those who refuse to acknowledge the severity and urgency of flood risk as a threat.
