ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a list of romantic women writers during the period 1789-1790. No age was so productive of learned women as the sixteenth century. The fair sex seemed to believe that Greek and Latin added to their charms; and that Plato and Aristotle untranslated were frequent ornaments of their closets. Learning was then held in such high estimation, that several great men were desirous that their daughters should be possessed of it, as well as their sons. Religion was deeply impressed upon their minds, and, agreeably to the fashion of the times, religion was almost the sole topic of their writings. Among the numerous Novels and Romances of the year, the public approbation has been particularly bestowed on ‘Zeluco, or various Views of Human Nature taken from Life and Manners, foreign and domestic, in two vols.’.
