ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some of the reviews of the works of romantic women writers which were published in the Analytical Review. The writers whose works were reviewed include Rossetta Ballin, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Aphra Behn, Anna Maria Bennett, Mary Dawes Blackett, and Maria Geertruida Cambon. The review says that Mrs. Bennet has considerable abilities, and deserves a place in the first rank of her contemporary writers of novels. Native good sense is conspicuous in almost every page, nor can grammatical errors, and numberless inaccuracies of the pen and press conceal, though they may obscure the gem. On Cambon's Young Grandison, a Series of Letters from young Persons to their Friends, the review says the translation possesses the ease and freedom of an original and the work is recommended as an excellent little book for young persons.
