ABSTRACT

[…] Why did’st thou listen to the treach’rous tales, That wealth is blown on Oriental gales; That spicy breezes waft perfumes around, And Earth’s best produce loads the fruitful ground; That here man wears the vestments of Content, 5 Whilst Peace supports her firm establishment; That Plenty e’er unloads her teeming horn, And often squanders from Profusion’s urn? Did’st thou conceive, as fabulists have told, That Eastern rocks are form’d of massy gold? 10 That copious wealth descends with vernal show’rs, And lolling Lux’ry lightens lagging hours? That gems refulgent sparkle o’er the sands,a Whilst vast abundance freights the various lands. 112Deluded stripling! short thy date of bliss! 15 Experience quickly proves you thought amiss: When once you land beneath an orient sky, Your visions cease, your dear delusions die; Chill Disappointment rears his frowning head, And sternly shows that all your hopes are fled! 20 Fancy no longer works; the downcast eye Beholds a sadly drear reality; Harsh Discontent assails the pensive breast, And robs it frequent of it’s dearest rest.
