First published in bound annual version of The Examiner, I, 1808, no page numbers, with this note, ‘The Prosepctus is to be found in the first number of this volume’. While this ‘Preface’ appears first in the bound volume, it was in fact written last, as a summary of the year’s work; the piece restates many of the principles of the ‘Prospectus’ (see headnote above, pp. 25–31).
