First published in The New Monthly Magazine, CLXXXIX, September 1836, pp. 68–70 The text below is based on the longer version of the poem which was published in 1844 (see endnotes for details of the textual variants between 1836 and 1844.). Hunt’s most notable addition here is a thirty-three line section (ll. 121–54) addressed to Lord Leigh, Dr Southwood Smith, Horace Smith, Edward Bulwer Lytton and Lord Jeffrey, which also contains an important salute to John Keats.
