Overpowered by oppressive sensations, Ethelinde prepared the next day to meet Montgomery; sometimes determining to receive him with so much apparent indifference as to convince him she repented of the imprudent half avowal she had made; and sometimes melting into the tenderest compassion, and relinquishing all pretensions to that discretion, which could be exerted only by giving him pain.
