ABSTRACT

The dawn had scarcely appeared, when Mademoiselle de Sevrac quitted the Chateau-neuf and repaired towards the Convent, where she found the Abbot waiting to receive her. Th e affected humility with which he welcomed her arrival, and the smile which sat upon his cheek as he conducted her along the chapel to his own apartment, rather tended to excite surprize than to command veneration. On entering the room he led her to a seat, and after a silence of some moments, began to explain his motive for having requested an interview.
