ABSTRACT

Monsieur de Sevrac and his family had scarcely proceeded half a league, when on entering the great road from the skirts of the forest, they discovered the mule which had been taken away by the stranger, fastened to a tree with two zechins25 lying on the bank close by his side. The postillion eagerly snatched the money and uttered a thousand grateful ejaculations to his saint for the recovery of the poor animal, whose condition bespoke the fatigue by which he was reduced.
