ABSTRACT

First published Edinburgh Saturday Post, 13 October 1827, p. 180. Reprinted Tave, pp. 152–8 (with attribution, pp. 158–60). This article is by the same person who wrote the article on ‘Waste Lands and Emigration’ (see above p. 98). Internal evidence includes the quotation from Twelfth Night, the Anglicism ‘Chancery’ (an English legal term, not used in Scots law), the use of question-and-answer, the italicization of ‘that’ and the unusual combination of political conservatism with advanced economic thought and interest in Ricardo and Malthus.
