ABSTRACT

First published Edinburgh Saturday Post, 11 August 1827, p. 110. Reprinted Tave, pp. 60–71 (with attribution, pp. 71–4). Internal evidence of De Quincey includes the personal knowledge of Coleridge and Wordsworth, and the ability to translate from Danish. Although this letter dates from before the two letters on the Edinburgh Review (see above, p. 6), it was held back, presumably by the editor of the Post. The signature ‘X.Y.Z.’ was used previously by De Quincey in the London Magazine.
