ABSTRACT

First published Edinburgh Saturday Post, 5 April 1828, p. 380. Reprinted Tave, pp. 341–4 (with attribution, pp. 344–5). This leader continues De Quincey’s Ricardian argument about the ‘doctrine of rent’, which was so unusual for a Tory newspaper of the 1820s. Although the article appears hastily-written, like many such leaders, it has several other indications, including the free use of italics, the dash, and question-and-answer, all of which also point to De Quincey, in the context of the Post.
