ABSTRACT

First published Edinburgh Evening Post, 14 June 1828, p. 45. Never reprinted. The first sentence links this leader to the leader of three weeks earlier (above, pp. 198–9), while the second-last paragraph seems to refer to another political article, in the missing issue of 7 June. De Quincey probably wrote many more of the leaders than it is possible to identify at present. Some of the evidence in this piece includes ‘between* (where co-editor Crichton would use ‘betwixt’), ‘viz.’, the many dashes, the italicized ‘their’ and the appeal to ‘pleasure’, combined with editorial-sounding phrases like ‘our paper’ and ‘our reasons … last week’.
