ABSTRACT
An earlier version of this chapter with the same title was published in Tait’s, I, September, October, November 1834 (see Vol. 10). In 1854 for AS, De Quincey added a long explanatory note regarding Coleridge’s plagiarisms and a note of Errata (included on pp. 420–23 of this volume) and omitted the final section of the essay which appeared in Tait’s, II, January 1835. Transitional points between the new and the earlier material are indicated in the textual notes below.
