ABSTRACT

Published in PW I, pp. 68–70. The fragment relates to the encounter between Jesus and Pontius Pilate, Roman governor of Judea, as recounted in John, 18: 38 (‘Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?’) and to the often-quoted opening of Sir Francis Bacon’s essay ‘Of Truth’ (Essays and Counsells, 1597–1625): ‘What is truth? said jesting Pilate, and would not stay for an answer.’
