ABSTRACT

This chapter includes Elizabeth Inchbald's surviving diaries, which record her social contacts and professional activities, itemize her day-to-day expenditure, and chart the development of affairs such as the Napoleonic Wars and the trial of Queen Caroline. Inchbald kept her diary of 1793 in THE Royal Engagement POCKET ATLAS FOR 1793. Unlike the other ten pocketbooks at the Folger Library, this journal is not bound in leather. Instead, it slips into a stiffcardboard case. The slip case for the 1793 diary is made of cardboard of approximately 0.1 cm in thickness. The case has a plain white back but is ornamented on the front cover and the edges in dark green. The side and bottom edges are ornamented with vine work. The front has a double-helix design all the way around the edge, enclosing a patchwork design.
