ABSTRACT

Language was originally instituted for the expressing our ideas. If we made each other understand the sentiments we meaned to communicate, it was enough. The saviour of mankind then had now been crucified, and when dead, lain in the silent tomb. The body was interred upon the eve of the sabbath. There was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sitting over against the sepulchre. They beheld the tomb and how the body was laid. And having returned, and prepared spices and ointment, they rested, we are told the sabbath day according to the commandment. Mary was left alone at the foot of the sepulchre. Solitude affords a mighty relief to all the tender passions. But Mary’s heart, entirely pre-occupied by a reigning passion, had not room for a thought upon a circumstance like this. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. He expostulates with her, he consoles her, and he triumphs with her at once.
