ABSTRACT

It is one of the painful duties of a public writer to have frequent occasion to censure the conduct of those of whose political principles he approves, and to condemn the measures adopted by those who profess to pursue the same objects which he conceives to be desirable. In America one sees that the right of suffrage is not universal, their Congress is elected not annually, but every two years, yet they have a good and an economical Government. The reservation of lands for the purposes of public instruction, shows that the Government of the United States is not unmindful of the future interests of this growing nation. Republican Governments have no enmity to the diffusion of knowledge. This general diffusion of knowledge on political subjects forms a security for the continuance and perfection of a Republican Government, which has never before existed in any other country in the world.
