ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the perceived contradictions between canon law and violent warfare inherent in crusading in the Baltic region. The main character is Bernard of Clairvaux, whose ideals of monastic knighthood influenced the Saxon knights who marched against the Wends in 1147. The chapter also provides evidence that missionaries across the Elbe knew they would need to provide a military aspect to their conversion plans.
