ABSTRACT

While coaches are often said to be role models and character builders, Special Olympics coaches go even further - they help athletes with intellectual disabilities find their own strengths and abilities. They help Unified Sports® partners better understand the similarities they have with Special Olympics athletes, both on and off the field of play. Thus, coach developers can play an important role in fostering these attributes and skills in coaches working with this population. In this chapter, we will provide coach developers with instructional strategies for preparing sport coaches of athletes with intellectual disabilities, with a focus on coaches working with athletes who are training and competing in Special Olympics and Unified Sports.
