ABSTRACT

The sporting experience for Indigenous participants within the context of Sport for Development (SfD) initiatives is contingent upon the educators, their background, experiences, and training relative to the groups with which they are working. Problematically, the preparation of SfD coaches is often inadequate and incomplete. In this chapter, we seek to outline the specific circumstances under which SfD may have positive outcomes. In doing so, we draw upon specific traditions associated with decolonizing approaches, critical reflexivity, and the prioritization of local knowledge systems. The adoption of any of the instructional strategies discussed in this book by coach developers who intend to work, or find themselves working, in SfD environments may be informed by what follows.
