ABSTRACT
I discuss the applicability of depth psychology in China, which has never before been done by a Chinese therapist or researcher. Usually, Chinese therapists’ default is depth psychology, which is applied in their own way. I note that the debate regarding the differences between applying psychoanalysis in Chinese and Western settings has always existed, and Chinese teams have already made modifications and contributions, in particular the team of Shen Heyong. As an insider who grew up in China, completed basic training there as an analytical psychology-oriented therapist and spent the past five years obtaining Western academic training, I look back at events in China and attempt to establish a more neutral viewpoint from which to discuss the possible problems behind the fever of depth psychology in China and the rush to ‘integrate’ or ‘localise’ the two depth psychologies there. I also point out the challenges encountered by Chinese teams. Despite these problems, I conclude with a very positive attitude regarding the future and the hope that I will have reason to continue my study of sexualised images and intimate relationships in China from the lens of depth psychology.
