ABSTRACT

Children and young people with Dual and Multiple Exceptional (DME) are not easy to identify, and their needs can be even harder to determine, both within and outside the classroom. Every pupil is an individual and their abilities and needs even more so. To best illustrate what is happening within schools up and down the country, this chapter presents six stories based on real children and young people at different stages within the education process. Each story provides a snapshot of the journey of the pupil and what has helped (or hindered) them along the way. None of these pupils’ journeys is over and each child may face further triumphs or set-backs as they move through the education system and beyond. Finally, the chapter provides a summary for schools about the kinds of things that they should be considering to support their DME cohort.
