Let’s walk through the standard structure of a film’s sales and distribution supply chain and then talk about each party and get into details. Typically, as a filmmaker or film producer, you will end up with one or two sales agents selling your film. These agents will sell your film to distributors (i.e. buyers) both domestic and foreign. A distributor will normally represent a single country. The agents could end up selling “all media” (i.e. all rights to the film) to a distributor in one geography or just some rights (like theatrical or DVD or digital streaming). You can get money up front or just residuals – or both. There are many, many options. You could even do it all yourself (DIY) and not have any agents or distributors at all. Let’s go through each step in the process, one player at a time.
