ABSTRACT

To make a commercially, financially successful film, we will need to write a story that people want to see. And film it in ways that people want to watch. The Hollywood story is about a hero or heroine that is in a state of uneasy stability: an unhappy or restless static situation. There is an “inciting incident” that challenges the hero to take a journey of some kind out of their comfort zone. The Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell was not meant to be a blueprint of the Hollywood picture – although it became that after George Lucas famously went on record as having read it while writing Star Wars. He meant it as a historical document recording the myths from all over the world that shaped how each culture sees themselves, others, and the universe.
