When you move outside the sales and distribution channels of film – and you begin talking to filmmakers, creatives, crew, writers and even some/most producers – you get a distinct feeling that you are dealing with a group of people disconnected from the “business” side of the “film business.” Although there is a growing number of writers, directors and other filmmakers that are becoming more savvy when it comes to the financial side of film results, as a whole, “creatives” are surprisingly uninformed and sometimes cavalierly unconcerned with the financial returns of a proposed film. It could well be how hard it is to get the information and how unreliable the data is on the finances, or maybe creative personnel just kind of give up.
