ABSTRACT

Memorizing a set of sentences is a kind of model for how to learn something. A good model describes the landscape but can never include everything to be considered. The developmental coaching model (DCM) incorporates adult development learning theory, including the crucible idea that people accept their own ideas much faster than they’ll accept those of others. For sustainable change, people must be in the center of their own learning, because they ultimately reject being told what to do. This chapter describes the three phases involved in DCM: building trust, contracting, and working the idea. For reasons of hierarchy and power (and the expectations and assumptions that accompany), coaching a direct report is considered more straightforward than coaching one’s peers or manager. Coaching peers or managers is very also much in reach for coaches with adequate skills and an amenable context.
