ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines some of the key themes that played a significant role in the development of the Indian Army for more than a hundred years of its existence. In order to understand the strains that became evident when India and Pakistan became independent, it is first necessary to understand how the Indian Army had developed since the late eighteenth century and how it was recruited, trained and organised until 1947.
