ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the edicts concerning gender relations in Samsu-iluna/Ammi-ditana/Ammi-saduka. One of the laws states that a rural woman-innkeeper who pays the palace for the barley and silver of the brewer, because the king has decreed justice for the land, the tax-collector shall not claim their arrears. Another law states that a woman-innkeeper who has sold beer or barley on credit shall not collect for whatever she has sold on credit. According to another law, if for a resident of Numhia, resident of Emutbal, resident of Idamaras, resident of Uruk, resident of Isin, resident of Kisurra, (or) resident of Malgium, an obligation obliges him to give himself, his wife, or his children for silver, to work off the debt, or as a pledge, because the king has decreed justice for the land, it is remitted, then his release is granted.
