ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the edict AASOR 16.51 (=SMN 553). The edict concerns palace slaves and palace retainers. The edict says that according to the king, none, a palace slave or a palace retainer, shall force his daughter into homelessness or into prostitution without (the permission of) the king. Whomever, a palace slave who has forced his daughter into homelessness or into prostitution without (the permission of) the king, or has given his daughter into homelessness or into prostitution, then they shall take him to the palace and they shall also take to the palace a second daughter of his as a gift, on account of (the daughter he has deprived the palace of). And as for him, they shall impose upon him a compensation to pay. They shall proclaim this document before the palace personnel every three or four years, so that it is not forgotten.
