ABSTRACT

The bottom line for a scientist is to be inquisitive about things, to perform experiments, and to discover things. Well, that is the simplified version of science, but just like history, students must be adept at reading, writing, and conversing about science. Much of scientific research begins in the library, first understanding the achievements and discoveries of others and then finding out what needs more substantiation and what is still unknown. The most important thing about inquiry is that the learning scenario students set up must be compelling enough for students to become engaged. The first caution is that inquiry is ideal for situations that can be discovered and explored. A science teacher would never use inquiry as an instructional method to teach students safety. The anticipatory set also has another function. It firmly puts the teacher in the driver’s seat and reinforces the concept that the teacher has something urgent that students want.
